A forest fire has so far destroyed over 1,235 acres of woodland between the municipalities of Ibague and Espinal in the central Colombian department of Tolima, an Interior Ministry official announced Thursday.
The Director of Risk Management at the Ministry of the Interior Carlos Ivan Marquez said that no casualties or destroyed homes have been reported.
“We have a report that at this time the conflagration is covering 223 acres, which the relief agencies and the Chaparral, El Guamo, Espinal and Ibague fire departments are trying to control,” Caracol Radio reported Marquez said.
Among the relief agencies working to contain the flames is the International Red Cross.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the wildfire.
