Villagers loot mayor’s home after suspension of bullfights

Colombia news - corralejo

Furious inhabitants of the northern Colombian town of Zambrano looted the house of their mayor after he suspended the local “corralejos” or bullfights.

According to Spanish press agency EFE, the mayor suspended this year’s popular games to show solidarity with families of local government officials who lost family members in traffic accidents during last year’s corralejos in Zambrano.

The decision led to a furious reaction from locals, who tried to burn down the mayor’s house.

Local cops were able to prevent the torching of the residence, but were not able to prevent the angry mob from storming and looting the home.

Corralejos are traditionally held at the beginning of the year and are immensly popular in the north of Colombia.
