US is the only ally of Colombia: ambassador

The United States has been the only ally of Colombia in recent years
regarding trade and anti-drug efforts, U.S. ambassador William
Brownfield said on Tuesday.

“This is a personal comment, but I represent a country that has contributed to Colombia in recent years, that has cooperated in anti-drug efforts and that is the biggest and best trading partner. Some other countries … have closed their borders and stated opinions that were a slightly offensive,” Brownfield said during the annual accountability speech of Prosecutor General Mario Iguaran.

According to newspaper El Espectador, the ambassador also said that it is “strange” that Colombia has to answer questions and concerns about U.S. military bases in the country. It is a matter between these two governments, Brownfield added.

The U.S. and Colombia are working on an agreement to allow the United States to
use Colombian air bases for its ‘war on drugs’ in the Caribbean and
Atlantic. This has caused tensions with Venezuela since Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez believes that the U.S. will use the military bases for operations against his country.
