Colombia has ‘Democratic friends’ in US Congress: Ex-Im Bank

Colombia has as many friends amongst Democrats in the U.S. Congress as amongst Republicans, the chairman of the U.S. Export-Import Bank declared Thursday.

Bank chairman Fred Hochberg rejected the idea that a change in the composition of Congress in November’s congressional elections will have a negative impact on the passage of the U.S.-Colombia free trade agreement.

“The FTA is an issue that is in the mind of President Barack Obama” he said.

Hochberg’s comments follow many months of uncertainty over the future of the U.S.-Colombia FTA, which was signed in late 2006. It has not yet been ratified by U.S. Congress, due to Democratic representatives’ concerns about Colombia’s human rights record and the suppression of organised labor.
