Colombia won’t cut security and poverty funds, despite crisis

Colombian President Uribe prefers increasing the national debt than
spending less on his security and social programs, he said Saturday.

According to the president, his ‘Democratic Security’ policy, mostly funded by funds coming from the U.S.,can not afford spending cuts, since it’s one of the cornerstones of the investor confidence that has brought economc growth to the country.

The president also refuses to cut in social welfare programs. “The poor are not to blame for the crisis of the economy. The bill for this crisis can not be presented to the poor,” he said according to newspaper El Espectador.

Uribe did admit the government may encounter difficulties finding credit for the government budgets of 2010 and 2011. The government is still talking to banks to secure loans if necessary.
