A new documentary on the lives of Colombian soccer player Andres and infamous drug-lord Pablo will premiere at this year’s Film Festival in New York.
Created by American director Jeff Zimbalist and funded by sports channel ESPN, the documentary – called “The Two Escobars” – studies the “secret marriage” between sports and crime through a biographical account of the men’s lives.
According to the director, the documentary looks at the similarities between the lives of the cartel boss and the soccer star, who shared a “fascination” for the sport, and who both met violent ends, with Pablo shot dead by police in 1993 and Andres murdered a year later after scoring an own goal in the World Cup.
“The Two Escobars” will compete for the title of Best Documentary at the New York event, which runs from April 21 to May 2 and includes films from 38 countries around the world.
The documentary will be shown on channel ESPN in June.
