Teacher’s murder in north Colombia sparks complaint to ICC

The teacher’s association of the northern Colombian Cordoba department will file a complaint before the International Criminal Court (ICC) after the third murder of a teacher this year.

According to teacher’s association ADEMACOR, the 22-year-old Dionis Sierra was murdered by two assassins in the municipality of La Apartada.

Sierra was killed when he momentarily left Teacher’s Day celebrations to receive a phone call, when he was shot three times by waiting gunmen, dying instantly.

ADEMACOR’s president, Domingo Ayala, strongly denounced the crime. Sierra was the third teacher to have been killed by assassins in the Cordoba department this year, whilst a further 15 have received violent threats.

Ayala announced that he will make a complaint before the ICC about the continued killings, indicating that the high level of impunity provides no deterrent. “Our only weapons are knowledge and books,” he said.
