A statue of one of Colombia’s most famous singers, Joe Arroyo, was inaugurated in his hometown of Cartagena on Monday.
The tribute to the salsa singer, who died in 2011, was unveiled in a ceremony in the ancient square of public enterprises in the city center. The city’s mayor Dionisio Velez Trujillo was present at the event to pay tribute to one of Cartagena’s proudest sons.
Architect Oscar Luis Noriega made the sculpture out of carbon resin with bronze and copper mixtures and stands three meters with arms extended carrying an African garb.
Born Alvaro Jose Arroyo Gonzalez in 1955 and known affectionately as Joe Arroyo, the Afro-Colombian salsa singer was considered one of the greatest Caribbean musicians of all time. The statue is not the fist honor he has been awarded as last year a species of bee was named after him.
