Sofia Vergara named 76th most powerful celebrity

Colombian Sofia Vergara is the 76th most powerful celebrity in the United States, said Forbes Magazine Wednesday.

Forbes cited Vergara’s breakthrough role on the television show “Modern Family” for bringing her fame in the United States, but also mentioned Vergara’s 17 years in show business which have helped turn her into an up and coming media mogul.

The annual list ranks actors, athletes, singers and television presenters based on monetary wealth as well as overall fame and media coverage.

The was the first year the Barranquilla native appeared on the list, and as Forbes mentioned, the past 12 months have been very lucrative for Vergara. In 2012, she scored three movies roles, as well as advertising campaigns with Cover Girl, Diet Pepsi, Burger King, Comcast, and State Farm Insurance.

According to Forbes, Vergara earned $19 million last year, due in part to her recently received seven-figure advance for a clothing line she started with KMart, as well as her ownership of half of Latin World Entertainment.

Topping the list was fellow Latina Jennifer Lopez, whose seemingly fading career was rejuvenated by her role as a judge on the hit show “American Idol.” Other top contenders were Oprah Winfrey, 18-year-old Justin Bieber and Rhianna, while last year’s winner, Lady Gaga, was relegated to fifth place.
