Santos cuts Europe trip short after mine disaster

President Juan Manuel Santos cancels meetings at the World Economic Forum to return to Colombia following Wednesday’s mine explosion that left 21 dead.

“Tomorrow I am going to return to the country to be with the families of the victims,” the head of state announced Thursday from Davos, Switzerland.

“We will begin a process of review and regulation of the controls that we have in mines so that these accidents do not happen again,” added Santos.

Santos has cancelled bilateral meetings with the presidents of Indonesia and South Africa, as well as various international businessmen, Caracol Radio reported Thursday. He will fly to Colombia after meeting with former U.S. President Bill Clinton and attending a dinner with other Latin American presidents.
