Colombian prosecutor general calls for debate on drug legalization

Colombia’s prosecutor general said the time has come to open a public and transparent debate about the issue of drug legalization.

The Prosecutor General Viviane Morales made the comments following similar remarks by Colombia’s head of state and interior minister.

Morales said of the issue, “After seeing the high economic and human costs that have been brought about by the war on drugs, we can see that criminalization is not the best solution.”

According to Morales, “neither complete criminalization nor legalization” will provide the solution. She is unsure about complete legalization due to fears about the effects this will have on consumption rates.

The prosecutor general agrees with both President Juan Manuel Santos and Interior Minister German Vargas Lleras that the debate regarding legalization must be addressed by the international community as a whole.
