President Santos thanks Colombians for solidarity during rainy season

President Juan Manuel Santos thanked Colombians, charities, and international community on Thursday for solidarity during the devastating rainy season.

“Colombia Humanitaria,” a charity that was created by President Santos to address the country’s rainy season crisis, has raised $109.5 million, which the president said “is the most donations received in Colombia’s history.”

“Today I say to all, on behalf of millions of Colombians affected by the rainy season, thank you! Thank you for responding to the call and for sending contributions in cash or in kindness to Colombia Humanitarian, ” said President Santos.

Santos also clarified that the money has been handled with “efficiency, accountability and transparency.”

On Wednesday the Minister of Environment, Housing and Territorial Development pledged $42 million to support the relief efforts and rebuild houses.

The rainy season cost more than $5 billion in damages to private properties and infrastructure, and is responsible for more than 450 deaths.
