Police catch drunk-driving mayor / priest

The mayor and priest of the central-Colombian town of Toca was caught driving drunk at a police check near his town. To make things worse, police accused the mayor of behaving aggressively towards the traffic cops.

Mayor Luis Gilberto Alba, who is also the local priest, was found with alcohol in his blood after returning from the nearby town of Tunja on Saturday night.

According to a local traffic police commander, tests proved that the mayor had drunk too much before getting in his car. Moreover, he physically and verbally assaulted the officers who pulled him over and prohibited him from driving any further.

The police confiscated the city-owned vehicle and called on the Prosecutor General’s Office to begin disciplinary proceedings against the mayor / priest.

Alba himself told newspaper El Tiempo the incident wasn’t as bad as the police made it appear. “We left a meeting and were stopped at a checkpoint and I told them I was not drunk. The commander took the decision to call the media and make things bigger, but the way I see it, nothing serious happened.”
