Pigeon caught attempting prison break-in

A trained messenger pigeon on Tuesday was caught trying to enter a maximum security prison to deliver a package to an inmate.

According to Police Commander Luis Enrique Roa, a package containing a mobile phone was strapped to the bird’s back, but the weight of the load prevented it from entering Combita prison, in northeastern Boyaca department.

Roa emphasised that this is not the first incident of its kind to occur in the penitentiary centre. There has been an increase in the use of messenger birds over the last few years, in particular as a means to distribute drugs and communication devices.

Police are now investigating who the package was addressed to.
