Mine explosion kills 5 in central Colombia

Five miners have been confirmed dead and one wounded in a mine explosion in Sutatausa, in the central Colombian department of Cundinamarca, Caracol Radio reported Tuesday.

The wounded were taken to a hospital in the department, while one of the bodies has been recovered and efforts are underway to recover the other bodies from the La Escondida mine.

Apparently the explosion was caused by a concentration of toxic gases, according to Cundimarca Government Secretary Manuel Valderrama.

This is second mining disaster in Colombia in less than a week, after an explosion in the La Preciosa mine in Norte de Santander on January 26 left 21 dead and many wounded.
