Colombian kidnapper of Swiss citizen jailed for 27 years

A Colombian man, who was convicted of the January kidnapping of a Swiss woman in the northern Colombian La Guajira department, was sentenced to 27 years in prison, newspaper Diario del Norte reported Monday.

In addition to the 27 year sentence, the convicted man, Jose Francisco Picon Lozano, was also ordered to pay a fine of nearly $800,000.

Lozano was found guilty of kidnapping Manuela Fankhauser on January 9 from her farm. Fankhauser was rescued by Colombian authorities shortly after her abduction.

Lorazon, who authorities say is not linked to any illegal armed group in Colombia, is currently being held at the prison in the city of Riohacha.
