IMF chief visits Colombia

The director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has arrived in Colombia Monday to assess the strength of the country’s economy.

The director of the IMF, Christine Lagarde, is to meet with President Juan Manuel Santos and other government officials, followed by a meeting with a group of entrepreneurs. She will then fly on to Chile to complete a tour of Latin America.

In a blog post about the visit, Lagarde said that to improve productivity and competitiveness “the region will need to invest more in high-quality infrastructure and education, to improve its tax and regulatory structure, and to diversify its exports.” She went on to say that for continued economic success “the region must ensure that the benefits of growth are shared more broadly.”

The Fund has projected economic growth for Latin America of 3.2 percent for this year and 3.9% next year. According to Caracol Radio, a recent visit to Colombia by the IMF highlighted the “prudent” management of the economy.
