Hostage’s father to run for Senate

Gustavo Moncayo, father of long-time FARC hostage Juan Emilio Moncayo, announced Tuesday he will take part in the 2010 Senate election for opposition party Polo Democratico.

Moncayo gained fame inside and outside Colombia for his lengthy protest marches demanding the liberation of his son, who has spent more than twelve years in rebel captivity.

According to the university professor, he will be included in the candidate list of the social-democratic Polo Democratico, “but with an independent agenda.”

Moncayo says he hopes to push for the release of all hostages currently held by the FARC.
