A Spanish citizen of Dutch origin was shot and killed by two hitmen in Barranquilla, Colombia’s largest Caribbean port city, on Tuesday night.

The victim, Jose Antonio Gomez, and two women returned from Puerto Velero, a nearby popular beach, when two unidentified men on a motorcycle who had been following Gomez’ car shot the Spaniard three times in his back and arm as he exited his vehicle.

The two women rushed Gomez to the Altos de San Vicente medical clinic, but he arrived without vital signs according to medical officials.

Gomez, 40, was born in the city of Haarlem in the Netherlands but was a citizen of Spain.  Family and friends told local media that he had been living in Barranquilla for over 10 years working on the purchase and sale of land.

The police are hopeful that they will be able to identify the assassins using footage from security cameras at the scene.
