Piedad Cordoba announced, via her Twitter page, that she will not be transmitting up-to-the-minute information on the upcoming FARC hostage release because there is no signal in the jungle.
Cordoba’s “tweet” comes in response to Colombian peace commissioner Frank Pearl’s statement on Tuesday warning against the use of social media tools such as Twitter to publicize the latest details of the hostage release operation because they go against security protocols agreed between the government and the FARC, reports Semana.
Pearl’s warning follows recent Twitter posts from Senator Piedad Cordoba, which gave the public the latest information on the status of the pending release of FARC hostages Juan Pablo Moncayo and Josue Daniel Calvo.
“This is not a circus, we’re talking about people who have lost twelve years of their lives tied to a tree and a woman who is to receive the remains of her son,” Pearl said.
In addition to the release of the two hostages, which is expected to start this Saturday, the FARC will also be releasing the remains of policeman Julian Guevara, who died in 2006 after eight years in FARC captivity.
