Government suspends agricultural subsidies to big companies

The Colombian government announced Wednesday that it suspended agricultural subsidies to big companies and that resources will be redirected to smaller producers.

“From now on, the resources that were available to big business or businessmen will be reallocated to finance small farmer businessmen, as according to their eligibility,” a Casa de Nariño press release stated Wednesday.

The announcement is the latest development in the ongoing argicultural subsidiary scandal.

The country’s current and former Agriculture Ministers are currently being investigated by the Inspector General’s Office over their alleged knowledge of the granting of government funds to rich and powerful families in the north of Colombia, while the subsidy was intended for small farmers.
