Go-ahead for resort in Tayrona National Park

The builders of a tourist resort in Tayrona National Park have been granted an environmental license to continue construction, reported local media Tuesday.

Colombia’s environmental licensing authority (ANLA) has granted permission to continue work on a resort project involving 12 “Eco-cabañas” in Tayrona National Park. The controversial project had been suspended since November 2011 after wells were drilled in contravention of its environmental license.

Local media report that ANLA is allowing the project, named “Las Ciruelos,” to continue because the owners of the resort have complied with the agency’s demands, including sealing the wells and restoring the affected areas.

The resort project covers 24,000 square meters of the national park. Local indigenous communities have criticized the government for failing to consult them before granting permission.
