Former DAS director arrested in Galan murder case

Former director of Colombia’s intelligence agency DAS, Miguel Maza
Marquez, surrendered to the authorities after a prosecutor warranted
his arrest. The former intelligence official is suspected of being
involved in the murder of presidential candidate Luis Carlos Galan in
1989.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, there is enough evidence to prove the former DAS director was part of the conspiracy to assassinate the popular Liberal leader.

Galan’s murder, exactly twenty years ago, shocked Colombia as the politician seemed to be ready to win the Presidential elections with promises to seriously tackle the increasing power of drug traffickers like Pablo Escobar.

The murder has still gone unpunished, but suspects are members of Pablo Escobar’s Medellin cartel, a fellow Liberal Party politicians and political rival of Galan and Marquez.
