Former Colombian congressman arrested for alleged paramilitary ties

A former Colombian congressman was Tuesday apprehended by authorities in the northern city of Barranquilla for alleged ties to paramilitary groups.

The arrest of the former congressman, Pedro Miguel Pealosa, was carried out by order of the Supreme Court. Miguel allegedly had ties to a bloc of the now-defunct AUC paramilitary group which once operated in Colombia’s northern Magdalena department.

Pealosa was the deputy to former Congressman Jorge Luis Caballero, who was arrested and sentenced to 10 years for paramilitary ties with a former commander of the AUC, Edgar Ignacio Fierro, alias “Don Antonio”.
