‘If my husband hit me, it would be because I deserved it’: Senator

A Colombian Conservative Party senator on Wednesday defended the country’s former soccer coach who resigned after hitting a woman, saying that “if my husband hit me, it would be because I deserved it.”

In an interview on the television show Pregunta Yamid, the congresswoman asserted that “we need to look at what happened to Bolillo. He has never been aggressive, and he is not a threat to society. There are some jealous women that behave themselves in a way that induces grave reactions such as the one Bolillo had. It’s a situation that the two should fix together… and I don’t see that the woman has come forward to say what happened,” asserted Rendon.

“You have to look at what sparked the reaction” said the congresswoman, and added “there is a conduct and certain pathology of women that starts, provokes, and induces reactions like Bolillo’s.”

The senator insisted that sometimes “we (women) are very irritating, we are very stupid and manipulative and sometimes we provoke certain reactions.”

When questioned about what she would do if her husband mistreated her, Rendon responded that her husband would never dare to hit her, but “if my husband hit me, it would be because I deserved it; not that I accept that he hits me, but that it would be because I must have really tried to pissed him off.” The senator declared that women, in general, are very complicated and that Gomez’s aggressive reaction could have happened for a valid reason.

Rendon also demonstrated that she disagreed with the fact that the coach had to resign from his position as a result of what happened. She argued that a personal problem should not be able to influence the work life of anyone and in the same vein she indicated that the Colombian Soccer Federation should not have accepted his resignation.

“Bolillo is an important public figure and has the rigor of the law and his own public enemies. They took advantage of a personal moment that he didn’t know how to control to obtain his resignation” the congresswoman claimed.

Additionally, in a dialogue with W Radio, Bolillo’s brother Gabriel Jaime Gomez spoke out in his defense to say that although he couldn’t justify what the ex-coach did he doesn’t believe that what happened is an excuse to “crucify him.”

“They are crucifying him because he made a mistake…he wasn’t conscious, and I want to tone down the discussion,” he claimed that if the ex-coach had not been drinking he would have never reacted the way he did.

Gabriel said that his brother Bolillo had suffered an attack in Ecuador and had been taking a medication that, maybe, when mixed with drinks “could have done him harm.” He insisted that “we have all made mistakes, and he was wrong, he was not in his normal state of being.”
