FARC kidnapped soldier and civilian in southwest Colombia: Army

The Colombian army on Thursday accused rebel group FARC of having kidnapped a soldier an a civilian in the southwest of the country.

According to the army, locals told the military about the alleged kidnapping of the army corporal and a local in the department of Valle del Cauca, .

The kidnapping allegedly was carried out in the municipality of Palmira, ten miles northwest of Cali, by a local FARC unit called the Gabriel Galvis and Garipiari mobile column.

The army condemned the alleged capture and stressed that kidnapping is a crime against humanity.

The FARC did not immediately confirm or deny the kidnapping.

The rebel group, fighting the state since 1964 and currently engaged in peace talks with the government, banned kidnapping last year. It has since captured soldiers and a foreign journalist in combat situations, but have subsequently surrendered them to the Red Cross.
