FARC kidnap Bogotá locality mayor

Colombian rebel group FARC kidnapped the mayor of Sumapaz, a locality
in the south of Bogotá. The guerrillas had threatened the mayor before.

The mayor was kidnapped on last Saturday, XIIIth Brigade commander Luis Eduardo Pérez told reporters Thursday.

Four hooded men stopped the mayor’s car, hit his driver unconcious and took the mayor into the mountains surrounding Colombia’s capital.

The army says FARC commander ‘El Diablo’ (The Devil) and three of his men are responsible for the kidnapping. ‘El Diablo’ is one of the FARC’s 53rd front commanders.

Authorities offer a 50 million peso (US$25 thousand) reward for information leading to the rescue of the Liberal Party mayor.
