Colombia news - Military explosives

The army discovered a large amount of rebel explosives during ongoing military operations against the FARC in the south of Colombia, El Espectador reports Thursday.

Army officials uncovered the secret stash while undertaking operations in the rural areas of the Nariño department which borders Ecuador.

The stash of explosives is believed by the army to belong to the FARC’s 48th squadron.

Troops seized 176 lbs of the highly explosive material Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil (ANFO), 88 lbs of shrapnel and two improvised explosive devices (IEDs), among other materials necessary for detonating such mechanisms.

The material has since been disposed of in a controlled manner by explosive experts within the army unit.
