FARC ambush in Cauca kills 2 policemen

A FARC ambush on a police vehicle in eastern Cauca on Thursday killed two policemen and injured five others.

According to RCN radio, the police unit was responding to reports of a kidnapping incident in the small village of Coconuco, in the Purace municipality. On the road from Popayan to the village, their vehicle was hit by an explosive, killing the patrol captain and another man.

The mayor of Coconuco expressed concern about increased FARC activity in Cauca, especially with upcoming municipal elections in March.

This is the most recent in a series of FARC attacks in Cauca. Two civilians were killed in an ambush on Wednesday, which is believed to have been in retribution for the military’s seizure of a massive cannabis stash reportedly belonging to the FARC. President Uribe said Monday that security forces will increase operations in Cauca to deal with the recent surge in violence.
