The European Commission has announced aid to 19 countries including Colombia will come to an end in 2014, to help those more in need.
Countries such as China, Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela, alongside Colombia, are now considered “emerging economies” less in need of charitable assistance.
Andris Pieblags, the European Commissioner for Development, said the cessation of aid was an “evolution in our relations with emerging countries and our aim to help poorer countries.”
Although the EU was stopping aid, it would continue to cooperate with the 19 countries on issues of climate, quality and human rights, Pieblags said.
