European invasion in Santa Marta

Santa Marta experienced a surge in European tourists over the holidays with 220 tourist coming from different parts of Europe staying in the newly renovated historic district

El Heraldo reported that there are visitors from the countries of Germany, France, Spain and Italy visiting this holiday season .

Omar Garcia Silva, president of the union for the hotel industry said, “Everyone agrees that the city is attractive, and many people chose this destination thanks promotions offered in their countries by Pro-Export”.

70% of the tourists are staying near the Historic District, the Rodadero or near Parque Tayrona, one of Colombia’s most popular eco-tourism destinations.

“The increase in interest in eco-tourism has been key for people choosing to stay in our city”, “said Garcia -Silva.

Tourism agencies have also been key in promoting the destination. Reports published by the hotel industry show a dramatic increase in tourists this season and destinations are at an 80% capacity hosting almost 2,500 tourists. The Rodadero zone is at 85% occupation, hosting close to 25,000 tourists and there are almost 5,000 tourists in the Historic District.

The beautiful beaches of Santa Marta have dramatically increased security to accomodate visitors and there are 400 officials patrolling the city in efforts to create a safe environment for those looking for a safe get away this holiday season.
