Senator asks court to postpone ‘parapolitics’ investigation

The defense of former Senate President Javier Caceres asked the Supreme Court to postpone hearings about his alleged ties to paramilitary groups, after the senator was rushed to hospital with diabetes-related health complications.

According to attorney Fermin Antonio Rambal, the coalition senator’s condition improved after his hospitalization on Wednesday morning, but he is still too weak to cooperate with investigators.

“He has always insisted on collaborating with the Supreme Court in the investigation, but the doctors decided that because of his state of health it is better he stays hospitalized,” the defense attorney was quoted as saying by CM& Noticias.

According to newspaper El Espectador, an assistant judge from the Supreme Court visited Caceras’ hospital and consulted doctors about moving forward with the investigation.

The newspaper says that the senator may be interrogated while in hospital.

Carceras was arrested on Tuesday and was to due appear at his arraignment hearing before Supreme Court investigators at 8:30AM Wednesday, when he was rushed to the hospital.

The veteran senator is suspected of having enjoyed the support of paramilitary death squads in previous elections.
