Mine disaster families to sue state

Family members of five miners who died in an explosion Tuesday say they will sue the state for neglecting to carry out security checks.

According to the miners’ families, the shaft in which their loved ones died was without electricity the day before the fatal accident. The family members say that because there was no electricity the ventilators did not work, which allowed explosive gases to accumulate in the shaft.

The tragedy in the central Colombian La Escondida mine is the second in a week. On January 26, 21 miners died in a similar accident in the north of the country.
