Councilwoman murdered in central Colombia

A councilor from the central department of Tolima was murdered Tuesday night in an apparent crime of passion, authorities announced.

Councilwoman Luz Yaneth Salinas had traveled to her farm in northern Tolima to tend to her animals when a man shot her several times.

A friend who accompanied Salinas said they recognized her murderer. According to reports, Salinas’ ex-husband could be the prime suspect. The witness will testify to prosecutors Wednesday.

The 44-year-old councilor was a member of the Liberal Party known for creating a fire department in the municipality of Murillo and for being a leader in social causes in the area, newspaper El Heraldo reported.

The police are currently investigating the motives and have not detained anyone at this time.
