Former Senator Piedad Cordoba on Monday showed a video of FARC commander “Alfonso Cano” on the first day of a forum on peace in Colombia in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires.
In the video, not made available on the Internet, Cano reportedly invites the Colombian government to talk, but warns that the FARC will not cease to exist.
“Today we are here, tomorrow we are not, but other members of the people’s army will take up our arms to move forward, not depending on the situation,” the FARC leader says in the video.
According to Cordoba, the recording is from July 2010, one month before current President Juan Manuel Santos took office and two months before the Colombian army killed the guerrillas’ number two, “Mono Jojoy.”
According to Cordoba and others who took part in the peace forum, the country is now at “a historic moment to make peace,” reported newspaper El Tiempo.
“There is a new situation and the willingness of President Santos for peace is obvious,” Cordoba reportedly said.
The three day forum is attended by Cordoba and Argentine Nobel prize winner Adolfo Perez Esquivel.
