Colombian town wants 2011 Youth Track Championships

The Colombian Cycling Federation aims to launch a bid to host the 2011
World Youth Track Championships. The candidature was officially
accepted this Thursday.

Duitama is located in the department of Boyacá and with a population of 120.000, it has played an important role in world cycling in recent years. In 1995, it became only the second South American venue for the World Road Championships.

“The support of the national government and the department of Boyacá (…) will be vital for the ambitions we have,” said federation president Plinio Casas.

Colombia is generally considered to be South America’s cycling hub, as it is the only country from the region to have delivered a significant amount of talented cyclists that went on to feature in large European races as the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia.
