Colombian inspector general attempts to prevent gay marriage legislation

The office of Colombia’s inspector general applied to nullify a Constitutional Court ruling which requires Congress to legislate on gay marriage.

Vice Inspector General Martha Isabel Castaneda filed the suit which says that the court’s July 2011 ruling ignores Article 113 of the Constitution’s Civil Code, which implies only men and women can have families.

The court ruled last year that Congress had until June 20, 2013 to legislate on gay marriage and failure to do so in that time would give gay couples the right to have their unions formalized by a notary.

These formal unions would not technically be marriages, but would grant gay couples all the same rights as heterosexual couples.

The court is expected to rule on the application in the coming days.
