A Colombian man decapitated his wife and five children with a machete and then committed suicide, various media reported Monday.
The 56-year-old farmer, hailing from the southern Caqueta province, severed the heads of his children– aged seven, eight, nine and ten years, a baby of six months and his 30-year-old wife.
According to neighbors speaking to Colombian local newspaper El Lider, the 56-year-old was “a responsible man, very hard-working and a good person.”
The commander of Caqueta’s police force, Carlos Alberto Vargas, said to Colombian radio station La FM that the man suffered from mental problems and had given his family tranquilizers before committing the murders.
Vargas further said that poverty, displacement and poor living conditions could have contributed to the actions of the man, reported La FM.
