Colombian film director Carlos Gaviria will receive the City of Venice Award for his film “Retrato en un Mar de Mentiras” at September’s City of Venice Film Festival.

“This is a new acknowledgement for those who participated in making ‘Retrato en un Mar de Mentiras’ and for the Colombian audience that has seen the film for themselves”, explained the director.

The film, starring Julian Roman, opened in Colombia’s theaters last year and has already won 19 international prizes, four national awards, and has competed in 14 of the most important film festivals in the world. It tells the story of the life of Marina, a young woman tormented by the memory of the violence surrounding the death of her family.

Gaviria competed against filmmakers from Africa, Asia, and Latin America for the award.

This year the festival will also be celebrating their 19th year of recognizing filmmaking characterized by artistic and social determination to express reality.
