Colombia to take part in International Year of Biodiversity

Colombia announced on Tuesday that it will take part in the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity.

Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2006, the year-long celebration of biological diversity aims to reduce the impact of deforestation, global warming and depletion of natural resources.

Colombia’s involvement in the event is led by the country’s Ministries of Environment and Education, as well as the Insitituto Humboldt and the Jardin Botanico de Bogota.

A number of events will be taking place in the country throughout the year, including monthly conferences led by environmental specialists. The talks will aim to raise awareness in the community about the importance of vital natural resources that provide food, water and medicine.

A climate change conference will also be held in the country, with representatives from all over the world meeting to discuss global warming.

Colombia is one of the world’s most biologically diverse countries in the world, and has a total of 55 national parks.
