Colombia to reinforce road security

The Colombian Army and National Police will expand security forces to cover an additional 3,000 miles of roads throughout the country, various media reported Friday.

According to Defense Minister Rodrigo Rivera, the implementation of new security features will include the increased presence of Armed Forces, intelligence, technology, and the creation of new military units. The mileage of protected roads will be increased from about 4,900 to over 8,000, covering a total of 150 roads.

The additional security measures will be concentrated in 15 different departments, six of which were previously unprotected. The minister said, “we will be providing additional resources… and activating three new Special Energy and Roadway Batallions in Meta, Putumayo, and Arauca.”

Rivera explained that technology will be used to create a Monitoring and Intelligence System to prevent attacks against the infrastructure.
