Colombia reopening door to Canadian beef

Colombia announced that it will lift a six-year-old ban on Canadian beef, Stockwell Day, Canadian Minister of International Trade, said Thursday.

According to a press release on the website of the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Day welcomed Colombia’s decision to reopen its market to Canadian beef.

“This is great news for Canadian beef producers,” Day said.

Colombia will be the first South American market to reopen to Canadian beef since the mad cow disease erupted in Canada in 2003.

Canadian beef importation will resume once valid certificates are agreed to between the Canadian and the Colombian governments.

Colombia and Canada recently signed a free trade agreement.
