Colombia remains on human rights black list

Colombia remains on the black list of human rights violations,
the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights (IACHR) reported on Friday.

The IACHR said that it is aware of the complex situation in Colombia after five decades of violence and drug trafficking, its impact on the civilian population and the efforts made in the peace process by the Colombian government.

Nevertheless, its concerns remain about the “success” of the demobilization of the AUC, the phenomenon of rearmament and the evolving of new armed groups.

The Commission also emphasizes in its report the impact of violence on civilians, especially the most vulnerable groups such as indigenous peoples and Afro-descendant communities.

It reiterates the growing complaints about the participation of members of the security forces in human rights violations, as well as attacks against human rights defenders and social leaders by armed groups and the guerrillas.

Besides Colombia, Cuba, Venezuela and Haiti are on the black list.

The President of the IACHR, Luz Patricia Mejiá from Venezuela, highlighted the process of democracy in the whole region, nevertheless, indicated that the success is not enough to guarantee social justice.
