With the buildup for the 2013 Miss Universe pageant in full swing, Colombia’s contestant came out in a traditional ensemble Monday during the preliminary National Costume event.

Lucia Aldana Roldan, 21, wore a dress made by Colombian designer Alfredo Barraza and Hugo Jamioi, an artisan from Colombia’s Arawaca indigenous community.

Titled “Jilguero del Guatapari,” the dress features flowing black and yellow “tail” and pays homage to the iconic “jilguero” songbird, which lives along the banks of Guatapari River in northeastern Colombia.

Roldan premiered it Monday, alongside performances by Colombian salsa, cumbia and currulao dancers, in an event designed to highlight the national heritages of the 86 contestants.

Winner of the Miss Colombia competition in 2012, Roldan begins preliminary competition Tuesday for the Miss Universe finals, which begin on the 9th of November in Moscow, Russia.

Roldan, a native of Cali, Colombia’s third biggest city, told reporters she is “excited to represent the culture, the tradition and the beauty of the women” in Colombia.
