Colombia fail to shock Argentina in World Cup qualifier

Colombia’s World Cup hopes were dealt a serious blow as Eduardo Lara’s men couldn’t shock Argentina in Buenos Aires.

Having beaten Argentina 2-1 earlier in this campaign, fans weren’t quite as confident this time around as Colombia just hasn’t managed to convince in recent games.

And similar problems arose in Wednesday’s match. Colombia did create some opportunities but always missed the final push needed to actually beat the opposing goalkeeper.

Argentina came close shortly after the break as Lionel Messi hit the post from a free kick. A few minutes later though, it was Daniel Diaz to smash home and hand Argentina a 1-0 lead.

Colombia did try to equalise but Argentina’s experience allowed them to hold on to their advantage and earn three points that take them to third position in this group.

With Venezuela beating Bolivia, Colombia drop from sixth to shared seventh place. Ecuador might in fact surpass the Colombians as well when Peru are faced on Sunday.
