During a non-stop 27-hour broadcast on both of the country’s private channels, Colombians donated $2.8 million to help victims of this year’s catastrophic rainy season.
The two channels, Caracol and RCN, on Friday and Saturday jointly broadcast the “telethon” where the country’s most famous people in show business and sports called on Colombians to help not just the victims of floods and landslide, but also people with a disabilities.
A total of $5.2 million was collected of which more than half will go to “Colombia Humanitaria,” the organization in charge of collecting money to help victims of the rainy season.
It was the first time in 15 years, the two channels joined hands for a “Telethon.”
This years rainy season started in March and killed 283 people so far. According to the Red Cross, more than 2 million people are affected by the weather and the government estimates that it needs $5.2 billion to repair damages.
