Colombia and Ecuador positive about improving relations

Both Colombia’s and Ecuador’s Foreign Ministers were optimistic about improving bilateral relations Tuesday after the first official meeting between the countries’ governments in 18 months.

The two countries are attempting to normalize the relations that were strained after a Colombian attack on a FARC camp in across the Ecuadorean border in March 2008.

According to Ecuadorean Foreign Minister Fander Falconi, the meeting had been honest, constructive and open.

His Colombian counterpart Jaime Bermudez announced more talks will follow next week to continue seeking ways to re-establish relations between the neighbors.

Following one and a half year of ruptured relations, the two Ministers announced they would attempt to normalize relations in late August.
