Colombia and China commit to increased congressional cooperation

Senior Colombian and Chinese congressional leaders have met in Beijing and agreed on measures to increase cooperation between the two states’ legislatures, Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported Monday.

Uyunqimg, vice chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), China’s top legislature, met with the President of Colombia’s Senate, Armando Benedetti, on Monday. As a result of the meeting, Benedetti expressed the high level of importance he places on Colombia’s relationship with China and that he hoped that by improving parliamentary exchanges and cooperation, the two could further enhance their ties.

In the past few months Colombia has appointed a new ambassador to China. The two countries have also announced plans for a jointly owned and operated railroad in northern Colombia, providing an alternative transportation route to the Panama Canal.
