Colombia applauds Chile miners rescue

Colombian Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin praises the Chilean government’s rescue of 33 miners trapped underground, calling the successful operation the result of “great solidarity.”

“It’s extremely emotional each time you watch a miner emerge,” Holguin said. “It gives one goosebumps.”

Holguin spoke yesterday with Chilean Foreign Minister Alfredo Moreno to wish him luck with the rescue operation, and to tell him that Colombia is attentive to the rescue efforts. Colombian Mining Minister Carlos Rodado also issued a statement of solidarity with the Chilean operation.

The 33 miners have been trapped in a collapsed mine since August 5, and rescue operations began early Wednesday morning. Thus far, 15 miners have been safely brought to the surface.
