Bogota’s bullring to host Davis Cup

Colombian Tennis Federation on Tuesday confirmed that the capital’s bullring “La Santamaria” will host the 2010 play-off round of the Davis Cup between Colombia and the U.S.

The decision to use the bullring as a tennis court follows successful temporary tennis court conversion projects carried out in Spanish bullfighting venues.

According to W Radio, Gabriel Sanchez, president of the country’s tennis federation, announced that La Santamaria fulfills all the requisite specifications outlined by the International Federation of the sport, and confirmed that it will host the U.S.-Colombia confrontation.

The bullring has a capacity of around 10,000 and the match is being billed as one of the most important that Colombia has ever had in the Davis Cup.

The last time the two nations played was in 1979, when the U.S. defeated Colombia 5-0 in Cleveland in the first round. The series saw the debut of Peter Fleming and John McEnroe as a U.S. Davis Cup doubles team. The U.S. has not played in South America since a 1997 first round series at Brazil.

This series starts on September 17 and finishes on September 19.

Will Colombia take the bull by its horns?
